Later in 1916 when he completed a sculpture of the same pose in bronze also titled 'Matrnite' then another oil on canvas embracing his later looser style he utilised those studies he had drawn some 3 decades before. The Original Maternite (1885) oil on canvas hung with pride of place in the Renoir family home opposite the fire place. IT NOW HANGS IN THE MUSEE D'ORSAY IN PARIS. Renoirs prepatory works for such important paintings usually included a large & comprehensive cache of prepatory studies (sketches) on paper. These studies ranged from quite basic line drawing sketches to more elaborate studies in Charcoal/Pencil, Sanguine & Chalk, Pen & Ink , Pastel / Crayon etc Ambroise Vollard ( Renoir's Paris Dealer ) acquired these Maternite studies, selecting the larger rather muted works to be published in his 1918-1919 Renoir Catalogue Raisonne's including this exquisite more detailed study work which he published as a Lithograph in 1910 due to it's superior detail. PRESERVATION The importance of preserving these painting studies lay heavily on Vollard as they were typically drawn on extremely thin paper and would in later decades become extremely difficult to display. Severel Maternite studies on paper were mounted onto canvas to prevent deterioration.During the periods of 1883 to 1887 Renoir produced many very large studies on paper which today show great wear and deterioration and are particularly hard to preserve. The pourus nature of the chalks, sanguines, pastels & charcoals etc that Renoir used made them susceptible to wear / loss, while the paper itself being so thin, typically makes them difficult for Museum curators to display effectively. By producing these wonderful Lithographs both Museums, National Libraries and collectors around the world were able to acquire a detailed image of Renoirs finest works with the advantage of being able to display them without fear of damage or deterioration.
