Utilizing simple shapes and lines to create complex imagery, Picasso's abstract technique takes on a multitude of layers in this work. Created in 1965, this linocut is printed and published on Arches paper by Arnéra, Vallauris. Signed by Picasso in pencil in the lower right margin, this work is numbered 78/200 in the lower left. Depicting the portrait of a dancer, one can only presume who the artist is illustrating by the title, 'Le Danseur'. Rather than creating the facial features with an outlined form, Picasso creates the form from within. Shapes overlap and intersect to create various textures, highlights, and shadows of the face. Using a dark brown as the highlight to an otherwise black scene, the viewer is drawn in to the image through the use of dark tones. PROVENANCE: Private Collection, Sweden Catalogue Raisonné & COA:It is fully documented and referenced in (copies will be enclosed as added documentation with the invoices that I will enclose with the sale of the work) : 1) Rodrigo, Luis Carlos, Picasso in His Posters, Vol I, 1992, listed as cat no 145 on pgs 318 and 319. 2) Bloch, Georges, Pablo Picasso, Catalogue de l'oeuvre grave et lithographie 1966-1969, Tome II, 1977, listed as cat no 1849 on pg 342. 3) Lieberman, William S. and McVinney, L. Donald, Picasso Linoleum Cuts, 1985, listed as cat no 107 on pg 105. About the Framing:Conservation framed in a Spanish style framed with archival materials and museum quality, this work is set behind a robust black and gold moulding. The contrasting tones of the framing compliment the deep hues of this work. The sculptural elements accentuate the loose, linear quality in this piece. Completed with white linen wrapped mattes and a matching gold inner fillet, this work is set behind an archival Plexiglas cover.
