Description
John Sloan etching Connoisseurs of Prints, 1905, signed in pencil bottom right (also titled in lower left margin near edge, and annotated 100 proofs), Morse 127, from the New York City Life Series, edition of 100, on ivory wove paper, with margins (5 x 7, the sheet 7 3/4 x 10 1/4 inches), in very good condition, tiny repaired nick bottom margin, prior hinging stains verso, archival matting. A very good strong impression. Here are Sloan's notes on this print: "Connoisseurs of Prints is the first of the New York Life plates. It shows an exhibition of prints that were to be auctioned at the old American Art Galleries on 23rd St. Henri [Robert Henri, artist and teacher] talked about making a series of connoisseurs, he was so pleased with this one." Connoisseurs of Prints became one of the most famous of Sloan's images, and within the world of print collecting, became an icon - it is hard to imagine what else Sloan, or anyone, could have added to this portrait of the portentous and portly perusing prints.
