Description
Following is the writeup by the noted postal historian and author Lee C. Scamp...PLEASE READ CAREFULLY                                                                                       WRECK OF P&O "ALMA" - 1 OF 4 COVERS SAVED (recorded by Scamp)                                                                                           PASSENGERS AND MAIL CARRIED TO ADEN BY HMS "CYCLOPS"On 12.6.59 the P&O "Alma" was wrecked on a reef about 50 miles from Mocha on her voyage up the Red Sea from Aden to Suez.  A boat was sent off to seek help, and fortunately encountered the "Cyclops" man-of-war.  The HMS "Cyclops" rescued the passengers and carried the mail back to Aden. This mail from China was next transported by the P&O "Bombay" of the Bombay - Aden – Suez Line, which only occurred a few times due to problems such as this wreck.  Mr. Kirk stated in P&O Vol. 2 that mail from the wrecked “Alma” had been lost.  Four extant covers prove that the mail carried by the "Alma" actually had survived her wreck.  Mr. Kirk subsequently identified another cover recovered from the wreck of the "Alma," possibly the one in lot 1325 of the 3.1984 John Bull auction.  Two other "Alma" wreck covers (although not so identified) were sold as lot 1020 in the John Bull auction of 1.1992, and lot 745 in the 2.1994 Gibbons auction.MAIL SHIP      HONG KONG     GALLE      ADEN       EGYPT     MARS.    GB     NY   Pekin                      5.5               22.5Alma (W)                                    28.5      10-11.6         - - -  HMS Cyclops                                               16.6   Bombay                                                       18.6          25.6Ellora                                                                           26.6            3.7Ariel *                                                                                                       6.7    19.7         * Vanderbilt LineWell, Ebay gave away 5 free listings so I thought I would take a chance on listing one of the great rarities of Hong Kong postal history.  This cover is the one listed above from lot 1020 of the John Bull auction of 1.1992.  Yes, I really do have 2 of the 4 surviving covers. If you need to talk to me about this cover, you can email me through Ebay. I will then give you my phone number if you ask for it.Payment by U.S. check, or money order, or foreign draft made out in US dollars. Sorry, no PayPal as this would be very costly to transact. Postage is $3.00 to anywhere in the world by regular airmail.  I will however ship by any means you specify at your expense. I have daily access to Fedex and UPS international services. The buyer will specify how they want it shipped and then I will calculate the fees.  Keywords: China, sea post, arrival marking, trans pacific, firm, colonial, france, ship, seapost, paquebot, packet boat, military, war, schiffspost, boxer rebellion, Germany, hauptlinie   linie Netherlands Indies, treaty port. stationary stationery great britain offices in china gb office british Edward George, Queen Victoria, Great Britain, Wreck
