Description
click for larger image71: 5c American Special Printing, Scott 204CONDITION: extraordinarily well-centered within immense balanced margins, deep dark shade and a proof-like impression on bright white paper, PF, this time, describes a tiny margin nick at right that barely detracts, and apparently is characteristic of the issue (see the previous description) GRADE: Extremely Fine CERTIFICATES: 1948 and 2008 PF, former not noting the tiny nick COMMENTS: In our opinion, this is either the finest or second finest centered example - very close to the ex Hetherington, Lilly, Mielstrup, Anderson and Floyd copy that realized $140,000 hammer in 2001. It is far superior to the ex Lyons copy that realized $87,500 in early 2000 and then realized $300,000 last year - the basis for the current Scott Catalogue value. There are only 18 recorded examples, and one is in the Miller collection and not available to the philatelic community. While the tiny nick is most unfortunate, it does not detract from the Superb centering, large balanced margins, and superior color, impression and fresh paper possessed by this stamp.
